My keyboard in thunderbird is confused, printing the wrong letter or symbol for many non-lettered keys. Can you help?

My Most symbols such as ? > < @ # $ 5 6 & " ' etc are all confused. I do not get what I actually type. This is only in Thunderbird. In Word 7, all is well.
