Someone logged into a friend's gmail account and deleted emails in it; that email account was linked to Thunderbird. The person that deleted the emails in gmail didn't have access to the Thunderbird account that the email address was linked to.

You would do it from the backups or archives that your friend made. They didn't make backups? Then your don't.
