Long story, short version: Problem is a progression from bad to worse. Firefox 33.3 won't download or save files (images, web pages, etc.). File picker doesn't open/ can't browse folders, etc. Tried troubleshooting including: reset firefox, safe mode, new profile, rename profile folder files, reset about:config entries, clean install, etc.- nothing changed. Running Windows XP with all updates installed. Using Avast free, Zonealarm free, etc. Workaround currently using down them all add-on is "ok". Any help is most appreciated.

Hello knowgo,

you can check it in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) .

(If works in Windows Safe mode then maybe the problem is other installed software, like security software, your Avast or Zonealarm).

thank you

ideato: Thanks for your prompt response. FF seemed to work fine with XP in safe mode, so I took a closer look at my security software settings (some of which I had changed during this troubleshooting time frame, as I had reinstalled the progs in question). Also updated Avast to current version (previously had performance issues with newer version). For whatever reason (IDK) Firefox seems to behave normally now. You can close this thread if you like, 'tho its a bit too soon for me to be certain... wish I had posted here a week or 2 ago! (LOL). Thanks again for the assist!
