Why does Thunderbird go offline automatically?
For some reason Thunderbird keeps going offline. What can I do to prevent this and simply have Thunderbird check periodically for new emails?

re: For some reason Thunderbird keeps going offline. Could you offer more info ?
- What OS do you use?
- What version of Thunderbird?
- Do you use POP or IMAP or both?
- Does it startup in offline mode?
- Did you close in offline mode?
- Did you select : File > Offline > download/synch now?
- Does it appear to do it after waking from sleep/hibernation?
Does Thunderbird always start up in Offline mode ? check Offline settings:
- Tools > Options > Advanced > Network & Disc Space
- Under Offline - configure offline settings:
- click on 'Offline' button.
- I use 'Always start up online'
- and 'Ask me' for other options.
- click on all OK's to save changes.
More info on Offline:
Thunderbird may have detected that there was a temporary, albeit small, disconnection with internet and so went into Offline mode.
TB can also go into Offline mode if you select to download/synch folder for offline use.
File > Offline > Download/Sync Now.

Start thunderbird in safe mode. Better?

Do you mean start thunderbird with the computer running in safe mode? Or start thunderbird in safe mode? If the latter, how do you do that and what are the side effects?

What kind of side effects are you concerned about? It won't affect proper operation

I understand. Thanks for the info.
By the way, the running copy of thunderbird has no extensions or add-ons, so I assume this is the same as running in the safe mode?

Now running in safe mode, we'll see what happens. This is very intermittent, sometimes 3 or 4 times a day, sometimes only once a day.
