A sub-account of mine on BTinternet.com cannot send or receive emails, it always asks says 'Login to server mail.btinternet.com failed.'. My main account works.
This BT sub-account has the same outgoing and incoming server settings as my main account has set up in Thunderbird but under a different user i.e. IMAP 993 SMTP 465, etc, etc. This sub-account used by my wife under her login has previously been working for some years and now suddenly doesn't send or recieve emails without asking for the password to connect to the BT Mail Server which it never does however many times I input the correct password - the same password I use for my main account I might add.
I use BitDefender for both users and settings look to be the same.
One difference might be in the update history of Thunderbird - the sub-account has Automatic Updates set and in it's history had installed version 38.2.0 successfully where as the instance in my own user does not have this update in its history but quotes that it was updated via another instance. Indeed, Help shows both instances as being on 38.2.0.
Driving me mad so any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what a BT sub-account is, and this may be necessary. However, reusing the same password for multiple accounts is bad practice.
Yes, webmail works using my login details - you can't login using sub-account details as it's just one repository for all emails in main and sub-accounts. By sub-account I mean BT gives you use of something like 11 email accounts linked to the main bill payers account so family members can all get their own email address. So I have my main account and one hanging off that for my wife - she has her own email address but I think it is more like putting a rule in that re-directs email from mine to hers if it is addressed to her. I might be wrong but that's how I think it works. And at initial set-up of sub-accounts it doesn't ask for a separate password.

Your server settings look good. Can you confirm the username is your email address including the @btinternet or @btopenworld.com part?
Beyond that try to disable Bitdefender and get rid of the 'Bitdefender Antispam Toolbar' extension. Thunderbird has a built-in spam filter.
