Graphics elements show random content, sometimes upside down

New York Times and other online news sites have lots of mixed text and graphics pages. The graphics elements frequently display broken-up pieces of other page elements, often upside down, instead of the graphics that should be displayed. I am using Firefox 44.0.2 on a Mac running OSX 10.6.8 (the latest version that my Mac will run). On my Windows PC, same Firefox version, I have no problem. On the Mac, Safari displays the pages with no problem. I have AdBlocker (on both Mac and PC), and on the Mac, sometimes if I turn it on, then the graphics start appearing correctly; then other times, if the graphics are wrong, turning AdBlocker off makes them appear correctly; most of the time it makes no difference.

I am unable to upload my screen shots. I will try to add them later. All I'm getting is: Uploaded images: [graphic with rotating timer image] Uploading "FirefoxNYTimesBad.jpg"...

These are the images I tried to upload from the Mac. I emailed them to my PC and uploaded from there. - RobHPasco (original submitter)

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
