When I try to attach a file, the system just hangs...not responding. This is something new this week...has never happened before.

This could be a Windows problem. I recommend that you run some maintenance and cleanup tasks, especially since your computer is an older one running Windows XP.

Start your computer in safe mode with networking and see if the problem remains. If attaching files works properly, you have a 3rd-party program causing the problem, most likely a security or antivirus program.
