This past year or so my HP laptop that is using Windows 7 and Firefox seems to have lost the return/enter function whenever I'm in gmail in particular when I'm in the text area of an email. It doesn't respond like it's supposed to, and it seems to be erratic, for example, non responsive and the cursor jumps to different areas of the text area once it decides to move. The enter/return key works perfectly fine in Office 2010 or when I'm browsing in Firefox. Even here in the details (text area) of this mozilla support page, while the return key is a little sluggish, it still responds as a return/enter key is supposed to.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
