Website stopped working, fixed once in Safe mode, magically worked again after a few weeks, but has stopped working again.

Some time in the past three weeks, a website has stopped working. The website is Wix where I run my own website and update a blog. I last used my blog without problems on 6th February. Today, creating a new blog post, the styles for the blog posts are missing and I could not open the blog Settings, getting an infinite loading circle icon. If I opened an existing blog post to edit, the styles were missing too. I contacted Wix who found it worked fine, so tried restarting FF in Safe Mode and everything in Wix works okay. I proceeded to disable all plugins and then clear caches and history, but Wix still has the same problem and only works if I boot in Safe Mode.

Edit: Recap for new thread visitors - it only worked once in safe mode but then stopped working; then it didn't work in any mode. After trying advice unsuccessfully, it one day started working again which I marked as 'Solved', but today the same issues have returned. This is only on Firefox, on two different PCs, Win 7 and Win 10. Other browsers run Wix fine.

Hi,

Safe Mode does not just disable add-ons, but hardware acceleration as well. Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

You will need to restart Firefox for this to take effect so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.,) and then perform these steps:

In Firefox 54 and below:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
  3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

In Firefox 55 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Under Performance, uncheck Use recommended performance settings. Additional settings will be displayed.
    Fx55Performance-disableHWA
  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  5. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

If the problem is resolved, you should check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in these Knowledge base articles:

Thanks. Didn't work and problem persists without Hardware Acceleration enabled.

. . . and only works if I boot in Safe Mode.

Was that Firefox or the computer Safe Mode?

Firefox run in safe mode.

Okay, trying again in Safe Mode hasn't worked - the problem persists no matter what now.

That is...

  • Website works on 6th February
  • Website doesn't work on 1st March, the next time its accessed
  • Restarting Firefox in Safe Mode, website works
  • Restarting in normal mode, clearing history, disabling add-ons, doesn't work
  • Restarting Firefox in Safe Mode again, website doesn't work

The site works in Internet Explorer 11. Tried twice, closing and opening browser, just in case there's a similar "only works once" problem.

Remove History For One Site

Open the History Manager <Control><Shift> H. In the search bar, enter the name of the site. Right-click on one of the listings and select Forget About This Site. This should remove all information, including any passwords / settings.

That doesn't work. Had already removed entire browsing history in an earlier attempt, but tried again anyway.

Website is : www.wix.com But without an account, you won't see a problem as it seems to work fine apart from the Blog feature. Also, just tried another website and it has a different Blog interface, probably because that's free. So you can't even create a new Wix website to test, because that'll work - it's only one specific website that's causing problems.

Just tried on a second PC. It still fails the same way. So that's Firefox unable to display a website properly on Windows 7 64 bit and Windows 10, with the break in functionality happening some time since 6th February.

Remove History For One Site

This clears out all data for that site. Not just the history. Please give it a try.

I already did. As I said, I tried again anyway despite having already removed my entire browsing history.

I appreciate all attempts to help and follow all advice.

So...Firefox is now broken and doesn't work as a browser on a vital webpage? It's just left at that? Is there no way to file a bug report and log file and get this fixed, or should I swap to some other browser?

If your browsing history is of no importance to you,

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

places.sqlite stores your History and Bookmarks.

Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox.

Firefox will then recreate the file using a bookmark backup. History will be gone, however.

Having tried nothing new, today it's working. Can anyone provide any explanation?

It could have been a corrupt file that was removed. No way to tell. If you are sure the problem is gone, Please flag your last post as Solved Problem so others will know.

What does Wix have to say about this  ? It's your blog on their site .....

When I contacted them the first time, they had no issues, though I don't know what browser they were using. As I say, it's only Firefox that has issues. So either Firefox is doing everything right and Wix is messing it up when dealing Firefox code, or Firefox is doing it wrong. Can't know.

I've contacted them again, though I'm not hopeful.
