Hello.

i have added a filter that filters all incoming email from a specific email address to a certain folder, this works OK I have also added a filter that filters all email sent to a specific email address, eg. mark@thunderbird.com to a certain folder, eg. Thunderbird. This works OK if i only send an email to this email address.

However if i send an email to another address, say john@zim.com and CC mark@thunderbird.com (the address which has the filter applied). the email goes into the Thunderbird folder only. there is nothing in the normal Sent folder. i cannot search for the email using john@zim.com in the normal Sent items

Anyway this can be sorted?

Hope i have explained myself properly?

Thanks Mark

I am floundering, but here goes.

Your filters need to look at not only to: but CC: if you want them to apply to a CCed email. Nothing will work with BCC's as some IMAP providers actually remove this information from the sent mail folder it is simply sometimes lost, but if it is stored the "recipients" Filter should include it.

What I do not get is what message filtering has to do with sent mail.

Searching should just be a matter of selecting the Sender and recipients buttons in the quick search toolbar. (it appears after you start typing, but it does remember what was used for the filter last time)

Hello Matt

thanks for the response i want all incoming email from mark@thunderbird.com to go to a specific folder i want all email sent to mark@thunderbird.com to go to a specific folder the filters i have setup work perfectly for the above if i receive and send and email from mark@thunderbird.com.

however as soon as i include another email address in the email for example if i send an email to mark@thunderbird.com and john@zim.com. i can only see the email sent to both addresses in the folder i setup for mark@thunderbird.com. the email for john@zim.com is not in the normal inbox

What you are wanting is for TB to create a second copy of the message. It doesn't do that. If that is your intent, you might explore the mailmerge addon to create separate emails and then apply unique filters for each.

Hello David

Thanks

yes, something like that, if an email comes in from any other email address, it must go to the normal inbox, however if the email i have set the filter to work on is CC;d in this email, then that must go to the folder i have setup for it.

Mailmerge will do what you want. I use it occasionally and it creates separate emails for each recipient.

Thanks David

do you know of a tutorial i can read through on this please

Mark, it is an addon and I think it explains on its page. whenever you include more than one person as recipient it prompts you on whether to send separate emails or not and, if you want to, it prompts you to save the email and then use an option . See attached instructions from the addon.

Hello David / Matt

Thanks for your responses.

mail merge from the reading i have done allows you to create and send personalised mails to different recipients. it sends each recipient a different email which then allows filters to filter these emails to different folders if required. This is for sending only. Am i correct?

what about receiving emails? If i have a filter setup for a specific email address, i.e. move incoming mail from this address to FolderA. This works fine if i receive the email from that address alone. however if that address is CC'D in a receiving email, that whole email goes into FolderA and not the normal Inbox

Do i just need to play around with the filters? Thanks Mark

Mark, Filtering does have a 'copy message' function, and that may fit your needs. I have not used it, but that seems a workable direction.

will have a look for that.
