am unable to install updates - seems to get stuck on download process

i frequently receive pop-up box that says new Firefox updates are ready to be installed. but whenever i start the process, it just stays stuck on the download phase - never continues to the next stage. under my Firefox preferences, i have always had checked the option for updates to be automatically installed. however, under update history, it shows that no updates have ever been installed.

  • Download a new copy of the Firefox program: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re)install.
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded.
