On launch, FF has two tabs. The front one is "Well, this is embarrassing. Firefox is haveing trouble recovering your windows and tabs..." The hidden one is the correct home page. The proper home page is a radio station and, if I do nothing or if I x out of the front tab, it works fine. !http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6143/5972322529_25e76ab314_m.jpg! [I put the address of a screen shot, preceded and followed by exclamation points. One hopes this causes the screenshot to appear.]

It didn't help directly but pointed me in the right direction. Replacing the pipe launched a blank page so I deleted the pipe and everything before it (about: session...). Then I closed FF and relaunched. It worked fine. Thanks for your help.
