When you do get the error: when trying to install Firefox, or when you start Firefox and try to load your home page?

Hopefully when you uninstalled, you did NOT remove your personal data. If you did, you may need to use a program like Recuva to try to "unerase" your files. If you need to do this, you should do that immediately, because as time goes by and Windows re-uses more of your hard drive, recovery will become harder and harder.

Also make sure to download the full version of the Firefox installer because some security software has a problem the the small installer stub version that needs to download files from the internet.

Hi Ninjasbabygirl, thank you for checking that. And I suggest removing those exceptions.

In past threads, an unwanted program named one of the following was using that certificate, which allows it to intercept and read your secure traffic:

  • BrowserSafeguard
  • BrowserSafe
  • Safeguard

Try using the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, to find and remove it. Clicking the Installed On column heading should help spot the newest items.

Although Norton is a solid product, different scanners use different methods, so some supplemental scans may also be in order. This article lists programs that other Firefox users have found helpful: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.
