After a few months of use, compacting requests arrived, then freezing started. how do I reset?
Stopped using windows live mail till Thunderbird quit, after only a few months. Latest problem is non display of most recent inbox items, plus freezing on posting sent mail to sent file. This was still after I deleted dozens of emails to create space, in case that was the problem, being possible small file storage capacity. Surprised it filled up so fast, if that's my problem, as Live mail kept piling up thousands of files for years before it crashed.

You should update to version 38.3.0. And delete as many emails as you can - most people don't really need their old mail
Also, make sure you are regularly emptying your trash and junk folders
