Where do I find the bar that says, "File," Edit," "View," "Go," "Message," "Tools," "Help?" I know it was replaced by the square with lines on the upper right, but I checked the "Menu Bar" from right-clicking the top, and nothing changed. The instructions say that I can keep that bar on my inbox by doing this, but neither it nor pressing the Alt key did any good. Is mine just a newer version of Thunderbird (I downloaded it in 2015) that doesn't offer this, or am I doing something wrong? Also, can I make those envelopes at the top, signifying mail, go away permanently?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Sherry, on Windows, if you tap the Alt key, the menu bar is displayed temporarily. So the menu bar is available on demand but doesn't take up space otherwise.

To display it permanently, right-click a blank area of the "tab bar" and choose Menu bar from the short list.

Well, my reading comprehension score is zero, since you already tried that.

I'm not aware of what could cause Thunderbird to believe it is displaying the menu bar (checked on the short toolbar list) but not actually be displaying it. Hmm...

What do you mean by the envelopes at the top? Can you post a screen shot of the appearance of your Thunderbird? Thanks, jscher, for your replies. Below is a screenshot of my envelopes at the top of my Thunderbird inbox. The envelopes appear after I've opened either new or previously read mail and have closed it again.

You need to close message tabs after reading the message or they stay open like that. Right click one and select Close All Tabs. I recommend using the Message Pane and stop opening messages in a new tab. F8 toggles the Message Pane on and off.
