How do I keep the red box with x in it in upper left had corner of page from disappearing?
When this happens, I am stuck on a page and cannot get off. It sometimes reappears when I bang my mouse around.

ctrl+F4 closed windows. But it sounds like your mouse is having serious death throws if banging it fixes the issue.
