When I try to right click and save an image file firefox appears to not know how to save it. It appears to try to save it as an unknown file? I am able to right click and save image files in other browsers without an issue. I have tried disabling any add ons / removed and reinstalled firefox.

Do you have Windows set to show common file extensions? Please see this article for more information: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions

Does Firefox do any better if you try using the Page Info dialog? You can call that up using any of these:

  • right-click a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Media
  • (menu bar) Tools menu > Page Info > Media
  • click the padlock or "i" icon to the left of the site address, then the ">" icon, then More Information > Media

You should find a list of all the media in the page which you can scroll through, preview, and use the Save As button. When a file is selected, it generally provides information about the image type (e.g., GIF, JPEG, PNG) and if you need to add your own file exension to the end of the file name, that might be helpful.
