I recently update my firefox. But, it failed. So I uninstalled it. I even removed all the old data in my user settings. Then I re installed it. But after that everytime I open it, it always showed the first run window (import setting, mozilla start page, etc). My customization profiles and settings all gone. It happened for several times, maybe 10 when I tried to close and restart it. Can someone help me? Should I stop using firefox?

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

Type about:profiles<enter> in the address bar. How many profiles are listed? How many should be there?

You can check the home page setting.

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

You can check for problems with the profiles.ini file [1] that registers profiles.

You can delete the profiles.ini file to make Firefox create a new (default) profile or use the Profile Manager [2] to create a new profile or register an orphaned profile.

You can find the profiles.ini file in this hidden location:

  • Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\
  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
  • Linux: ~/.mozilla/firefox/

It is possible that there has been a problem with the profiles.ini file that registers profiles and that a new default profile got created.

You can check if you have an orphaned profile that isn't registered in profiles.ini and that doesn't show in the Firefox Profile Manager. You can check that by opening the current profile folder via the about:profiles page and go up one level to see if there are unlisted profiles listed. If you have found an orphaned profile then you may want to recover some personal data.

I've tried all the things you suggest above but my browser still doesn't work. Everytime I open it, my profile is lost
