Following latest update, Google home page will not load

I have used Firefox as my default browser on my Android phone for some years now and I had set the home page as Google. Following the most recent update last week, Firefox now opens with a page labelled "Firefox Browser" and shows three options for links, including Google, getpocket.com (whatever that is?!), and Wikipedia. When I select any one of those links, the page fails to load. And when I hit the "back" button and try another, it doesn't automatically close the previous selection, and so I have more than one tab open, and none of the them loading the designated page. So, how do I get this new version to function correctly? I don't see any way of configuring it in Settings so that it functions as it did before (it wasn't broke, so why was it fixed?). And why was "getpocket.com" even added as on option? As reluctant as I am, I am currently being forced to use Google Chrome on my phone.
