Lost passwords after system restore; how to recover

Recently had to do a system restore to go back to earlier point before some nasties. Point of restore was computer chosen and was before any Firefox passwords were saved. How do I now read or restore these passwords on an XP system. I saw an answer for W7 but does not work on XP.

Did you create a backup of the Firefox Profile Folder?

If any of the two files key3.db or signons.sqlite were replaced or damaged and you do not have a backup of them both then your passwords are lost.
