Both Seamonkey and Firefox connect at 1/10 the available download speed on 64 bit Vista. Scanned computer for malware. Reset firefox. Both internet explorer and chrome show 32 Mbps on speedtest.net. Dowload speed only 3 Mbps on seamonkey and firefox, so configuration or code problem

Have you tried reconfiguring your Firewall/Anti-virus? Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet

I have checked and there is nothing stopping it from the internet, though I think your suggestion is a good one.

I am inclined to think that because Seamonkey and Firefox share the same code base and configuration system, that it is somehow within a configuration or a bug in the software. Why it only shows under Vista 64 bit is the interesting thing.

Firefox works fine on another computer running XP 32 bit into the same router.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Use F-Secure which is provided by Charter.. Already started in safe mode and no difference. Tried disabling all plug ins and extensions, no difference.

Try to Reset Firefox. F-Secure has caused these issues before.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Already reset. No go. Brought back all the add ons I had disabled or removed.

Seamonkey has same problem. It has had little alteration because it is used exclusively by my wife. They must share something that is causing the problem.

It was already disabled. Nice try though.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that works better.

That is an excellent suggestion. I will try it out when I can get access to the computer again. It would show whether it is a computer problem or a Firefox problem. One thing I have noticed between the XP computer and the Vista computer is that the Vista computer jumps way high in throughput to 100 Mbps then drops way low then way up again. The average is 35 Mpps when using Chrome or Internet Explorer, but it is very uneven. The XP computer goes up to 48 Mbps and stays steady. It seems like there is something in Firefox where it can't keep up so it drops way off. The Vista computer is a 6 gig RAM quad core, so you would think it would always be faster.

Tried it this morning and in safe mode problem goes away. Behaves exactly as XP computer. I will have to fiddle with the various drivers and see what is going on. Why it just affects Firefox may be clearer when I can find the problem.

Thanks for getting me started in a productive direction.
