How do I get rid of the McDonald's ads that are appearing on websites and obscuring my screen? The appear in front of articles or photos and I can't remove them

About 2 days ago I began having issues with these McDonald's ads appearing on certain websites that I frequent such as huffingtonpost.com and weather.com. I will go to read an article and smack in the middle of the page is this ad blocking the article. Rolling over it doesn't do anything. When I go to weather.com and type in my zip code I will be taken to that page but immediately all of the weather info disappears and a McDonald's ad appears. I don't know if this could be a virus or spyware or some kind? I have a Dell and am running Windows 7.

Unexplained behavior across multiple sites could indicate an unwanted add-on. Could you review your extensions and disable everything nonessential (that's usually almost everything), restart Firefox, and see whether that shuts down the ads?

With respect to spyware or malware, I assume you have good real-time protection already. You might still want to run some supplemental scans. These two free tools are highly regarded:

Malwarebytes Anti-malware : http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

SUPERAntiSpyware : http://www.superantispyware.com/

Thank you so much for your advice. I did exactly what you recommended and used an anti-malware program. The problem was immediately gone. Thanks again!
