When starting up firefox, a second tab loads, it appears even though I have it setup to only load 1 home page.

for a couple of years, through various versions of firefox, i have had a problem of a chinese web page opening up a second tab upon ff startup. I have repeatedly reset the start page through the options settings. I have tried to search the computer for various names of the offending web page to try and find where the file may reside, no luck. The opening sequence is as follows firefox starts the desired home page tab loads. behind the firefox window, I see a screen flash, it appears to be a DOS window that opens and closes instantly. the offending tab loads, (so now there are 2 tabs) and the webpage loads.

the second tab page is a chinese web site (ip 142.4.108.73), this is the final ip to show. scans of the computer for virus, bots..... never find or clean up the problem

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.
