Firefox hangs while Excel macro runs

I have a long-running Excel VBA macro. I am finding that usually (perhaps always) FireFox freezes when I start one of these. I don't see any major resource issues while they run; the Excel macro is accessing web services and saving some files, but nothing that would dominate cpu or disk. I disabled hardware acceleration just in case that was the issue, with no change. Sometimes FireFox becomes active again while the VBA macro is still running. This is on a Lenovo W520 using multiple displays.

Not a deadly urgent issue, but it is a curious symptom ... I didn't see anything quite like it in the help.

Thanks ...

Curtis,

I don't think these are relevant, since it hangs, it doesn't actually crash. It just happened twice today. But here you go:

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

Try using the macro while Firefox is in Safe mode. Same result?

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Thanks!

Curtis,

Good suggestion. I restarted in safe mode and am not seeing the issue now. As I get time, I'll do binary search or perhaps just enable the plugins one at a time as I need them ... for now I'll disable them all except the ones I absolutely need and see what happens.

Thanks!

Hello,

If it works in Safe Mode try resetting Firefox.

Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems?

Hope this helps!

Curtis,

I'd rather not do a reset because I don't want to lose my extensions and some about:config adjustments I had to make, unless I have to.

So instead I just tried disabling all the add-ins, retesting, and then adding them back in to try to find the culprit. Unfortunately, I was able to re-enable all of them without seeing the issue, so this is more complicated than we thought. I will need to characterize the issue further before we can nail this down.

Thanks ...
