could not connect to make recommended download today though it appears to be trying to access

I received a message today saying I should download a Thunderbird update, as I recall, about security issues. I clicked the download; got a message saying Thunderbird was being accessed. That message continued to run for hours. It did not appear that access was ever achieved or that the download occurred.
