The search box at top right is great, but requires typing. I would like a right click item so I could right click on a sender or subject and then click search and Thunderbird would automatically search for that sender or subject. I keep hundreds of emails for reference and this would save a lot of time.

Chosen solution

The Nostalgy extension gives you this option: By typing `, you can filter the thread pane on messages from the same sender. By typing ` again, you can filter on subject. If you don't like this key assignment, you can change it also in Nostalgy's options.
