wHY HAVE i GOT DUPLICATE COLUMNS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE,INBOX SENT JUNK ETC ETC

You could be describing Unified Folders view. Or maybe you have used Outlook Express previously and hadn't anticipated the way Thunderbird presents each account separately with its own collection of folders.
