Older versions DID have BOTH spam and junk. They are not the same.

Part of my problem is that I have settings marked to move junk mail to trash but is does not do that. It will leave junk mail in inbox in spite of it being marked junk. I do not want junk in a "Junk" folder - I want it in trash, which is deleted when I exit. It's harder to get rid of junk than it is to delete uwanted messages. I have used Tbird for a long time, and it used to have "spam" button as well as junk, but it no longer has that option. Spam and junk are not the same. I get junk mail from people I do not want to get email from. This kind of email is just irritating. Spam is email from someone I have never done business with and is an illegal attempt to get business. May also include phishing emails as spam.

I don't think Thunderbird ever had a 'Spam' button. Did you install an add-on for that?

Spam and junk are not the same.

Thunderbird uses the term junk, providers often use the term spam. At the end of the day it means the same.

I get junk mail from people I do not want to get email from.

You can address this by creating a filter and simply delete messages from certain senders. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Filters_(Thunderbird)

Spam is email from someone I have never done business with and is an illegal attempt to get business.

This is addressed best using Thunderbird junk mail controls. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Junk_Mail_Controls

You can use the 'Junk' button to manually mark messages as junk.

May also include phishing emails as spam.

Thunderbird has a built-in phishing protection. You can turn it on at Tools (Alt-T) - Options - Security - Email Scams Check 'Tell me if the message I'm reading is a suspected email scam.'
