Where is that advice coming from?

On Firefox for Android, there isn't a standard zoom control like you would have on a desktop browser (for example, 100%, 125%). Instead, you can try double-tapping a column to zoom the page so that column takes the full available width, or try pinching apart/together to zoom in/out.

I'm assuming that isn't solving the problem.

When you visit a site, if the site asks Firefox your screen resolution, Firefox for Android reports the actual size divided by 3. This may affect the layout of the page, for example, the site may change from a 2 column layout to a one column layout. You can change this setting, but the results likely will be mixed, with some sites laying out better and others becoming unreadable.
