Thunderbird stopped downloading my emails, how do I fix this?

On November 28 Thunderbird stopped downloading my emails. I tried clearing space in the inbox by deleting attachments and moving files but that had no effect. Then on December 1 it started working again but then stopped after about 5-6 hours.
