Hi,

after a tedious search for a fix, I hope to find support for my problem with sending emails via Gmail using Thunderbird as the email client. This a new install of the Linux version of Thunderbird, icedove. I have used the automatic account creation to generate my gmail account. Receiving messages worked out of the box, but somehow sending emails does not work. I checked the SMTP settings and tried all kind of suggestions on the Gmail site, like the Recaptcha or the allowing access for less secure apps.

Here I post the outcome of the troubleshooting, maybe there is something that allows you to give me a hint...

Chosen solution

This is odd. As said before, your account settings look good. With 'Authentication type' set to 'OAuth2' you don't have to 'allow less secure apps'. You don't need an app password either. With the error you get, this doesn't look like a password issue anyway.

Did sending mail ever work on this machine? Have you made any changes recently? I'd rather look outside of Thunderbird (or Icedove) for explanations what's wrong. But without knowing details about your environment I'm a bit struggling to suggest anything specific. A reboot of the computer probably doesn't hurt.

The exact same Gmail settings work fine here with Thunderbird.

Icedove is a Debian invention. Did you try to ask in a Debian forum?

Your account settings look good to me. What actually happens when you attempt to send mail?

Can you confirm you can receive mail?

Dear christ1,

thanks for your feedback. I checked multiple Debian forums, but found the discussion about Gmail and Thunderbird here much more alike to the problem I have :)

When I send an email, I got a progress bar popping up saying "Connecting to smtp.gmail.com..." , staying for quite long and vanishing with the final message "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again."

I can confirm that I receive emails.
