After being prompted on a mobile device to 'disable less secure apps' in gmail, could no longer access emails on PC via Thunderbird. Re-set 'enable less secure apps', but still cannot access emails on PC. I have tried changing outgoing server password to Oauth2, no joy. Re-set this back to normal password, still getting the same 'Error with account pop.mail.com'. Even tried re-booting the PC. I can access Gmail directly on the PC, just not via Thunderbird. Even got the latest Thunderbird update. Seems like a BIG mistake disabling less secure apps.

Chosen solution

Re-set this back to normal password, still getting the same 'Error with account pop.mail.com'.

What is the exact error message?

In any case, with POP you'll have to 'allow less secure apps' in your Google settings. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6009563

OAuth2 authentication is not supported for POP accounts.

Even after allowing less secure apps in Google, Thunderbird still wasn't allowed access to emails, receiving or sending. The only solution, for me, was to go for Dual Authentication on the PC. As it is a one time only authentication, it is not really a problem.
