Windows 10 (64 bit) Thunderbird 60.0b7 (64 bit) Just had an automatic Thunderbird email update. There was an "Option" to insure that my sent email was received at the required location. You would send a "ping" informing you, - Email received - Email "not" received When it comes to very important email's, this tool was a great asset. Why was this very important (secure) "Option" removed? Thanks

Are you referring to the option to send a read receipt or delivery status notification under Options in the Write window? If you were updated to the latest beta version, 66b2, there's a good chance that feature is broken or incomplete. You're probably better off with the release version, 60.5.1, and 32-bit instead of the (unsupported) 64-bit version.

There is no "ping" native to Thunderbird. There is Read Receipt like decscibed above where you ask the recepient to confirm they received it but that is optional. Both requesting one and the receipient acknowledging it.

So if you had something that worked as you describe you need to remember what add on you installed to create that function.

Read Receipt... Forgot the actual "Option" name.. It was never an added on "application".. There was an "Option Icon" in the Thunderbird title header... Request "Return Receipt" ... Request "Immediate Reply.. I have had Thunderbird from the very beginning.. It looks like Thunderbird email updates no longer support this very valuable safe option.. Thanks Again.. PS sorry but got to go..

What you do not appear to be aware of is that the recipient has full control of sending of a read receipt. So it might not be a change in Thunderbird. It may be a change at the receiving end. Many corporate mail systems have server set return receipts, but in internet mail has never been more than a request. I would not be surprised to learn that the likes of Google, yahoo and outlook just dropped them from the web mail interface.

There are I am sure some mail servers that routinely place the read receipts in the spam folder as well.

As for delivery status notification, Thunderbird still allows you to request them, but most mail servers have them turned off because of backscatter (more information at wikipedia. Just search the term)

The options are still present and work with whatever severs still support them as you can see below.

Thank you very much.. You hit the nail on the head.. These (3) icons Options Tool Help no longer exist on my Thunderbird 60.0b7 (64 bit) and even older Thunderbird (32 bit).. Options Tool Help have been separated now into the top right (3 lines) location.. Options and Tools have been changed and there is no longer "Delivery Status Notification and a new Chat area has been added.. My new Thunderbird 60.0b7 (64 bit) now also has (5) different Icon Tag.. These are (2) images of the new updated version.. Your next major Thunderbird version may also be updated to this.. Thanks Again.

I have been using Microsoft Home PC since Dos 3.2 .. A ping sends messages from one computer to another to troubleshoot Internet Protocol network connections.. A ping test determines whether a client (computer, phone, or similar device) communicates with another device across a network.. In all of my previous versions of Thunderbird Email, I always used "Delivery Status Notification".. This especially applied to very important documents to be sent.. (business, lawyers, tax forms, etc.).. In cases where network communication is "successfully connected", email was "received", the ping test would show all required detail information and show "confirmation" that email was successfully received.. In cases where network communication is "NOT established", email was "not received", the ping test would show all required detail information and show that email was "Not" successfully received.. From actual experiences, using Thunderbird Email from the very beginning, I have had only (1) email refused because the "email receiver" changed their "email address".. During this same time period, I received many "email errors" because I only had (1) small detail incorrect.. How can Google, Yahoo, Outlook and many other thousands of private internet providers, I personally use a high secure private business internet provider, "not block" an email message and at the same time "block" a very advanced "ping software program" ??

more options

Why did Thunderbird Email new advanced updates "delete" their best asset "Delivery Status Notification"?? No other email software program had this option.. For me when "Delivery Status Notification" was still available, I could insure (100%) that my (business, lawyers, tax forms, etc.) were received.. Thunderbird Email, removing "Delivery Status Notification" totally screwed up when it came to have the most advanced "secure" email software program..

Your are using unsupported beta software. You should ask whoever developed the beta 64bit version you are using.

Pings work between physical items with an IP address. This does not apply to an email message so I am not sure why you keep bringing it up. Yes you can ping an email server to see if it is online but this tells you nothing about the status of an individual email message. As Matt pointed out even DSN is iffy at best.

The image you posted was showing the menu for the main three pane window. The image I posted was from the "write" window. Starting on the wrong window will lead you off into a lot of incorrect assumptions.

1. The release version is 60.5.1, it would appear you have somehow managed to get left on a beta version. I suggest you download and install the release version from thunderbird.net as it is actually newer than what you are using.

2. The application menu has not changed in the past couple of years, but there is nothing on it that is not on the main top menu. I recommend to everyone. Right click the toolbar or menu bar in the main three pane window and make sure you have the menu bar, mail toolbar and the folder pane toolbar all turned on. In the "write" window also right click and make sure you have the menu bar and composition toolbar turned on. I find the application menu to be very difficult to navigate as you have to hover with the mouse or click the > to see the next level of menu.

I apologize in advance if I have confused everyone about the world "ping" when it comes to emails.. (Feb 20, 2018) How to Verify an Email Address?.. https://www.labnol.org/software/verify-email-address/18220/ .. Ping an Email Address to Validate it!.. When you send an email to someone, the message goes to an SMTP server which then looks for the MX (Mail Exchange) records of the email recipient’s domain.. Best Regards

Thanks to Airmail and Matt... I was looking in the total wrong locations... I never thought that they would update my Thunderbird email with a "beta" test version.. Now I have to do an update and delete all of C:\Program Files Mozilla Thunderbird.. and also my old C:\Program Files (x86) Mozilla Thunderbird.. Once I clean everything up, I will get back..

you can do all that if you want... or just install the download. Either will update your Thunderbird version.

thunderbird.net </blockquote>

Warning Updates: Was (Thunderbird 60.5.1) and is now (60.5.2) - February 25, 2019) at thunderbird.net and it is "not" a beta version and a separate "division"... Thunderbird version 60.0 is only offered as direct download from thunderbird.net and not as upgrade from Thunderbird version 52 or earlier. A future version 60.1 will provide updates from earlier versions... While Thunderbird is now an independent project separate from Mozilla, Mozilla has agreed to collect donations on our behalf... Now I have to find an old versions of Thunderbird version 52 or earlier that is not from a different release type... https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ ... Index of /pub/thunderbird/releases/ ... https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/5.0/win32/en-US/ = See image below... Some where and some how Thunderbird email has changed... Will be contacting Thunderbird to open a bug in a component in this email software... (Ping Emails)

I really fail to understand what that last message even means.

"Installing the current release version is what you set out to do and I see nothing that is stopping you from doing that. But you posting all sorts of weird stuff about version 5. I remember it, but not fondly, just that is was better that the 3 series which was a pig.

Despite what information you think you have located, installing the release version will update what you have, and downgrade it as required. Fluffing about with other versions will simply confuse issues even more for exactly no return other than a significant increase in your security risk from running old software.

Just go to ... Thunderbird.net ... and see for yourself... Download = (Thunderbird 60.5.2)... It will down load (Mozilla Thunderbird 60.5.2) into C:\Program Files (x86) Mozilla Thunderbird...

Please find my error...

funny how the bug reporting system is located in bugzilla.

That is here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ not at github.

So I have no idea where you are going with this the further the topic goes the more it looks to me like someone has stopped taking their meds, rather than a support topic. So I will not be responding to any further posts here unless they make logical sense.

Sorry for all of the confusion.

This being a mozilla support community, I came here for help.. At first I had to teach you how to ping an email for confirmation.. Then I had to inform you that Thunderbird email is now Thunderbird lighting version https://www.thunderbird.net/en-GB/ Thunderbird Setup 60.5.2.exe

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ .. Bug Writing Guidelines .. https://developer.mozilla.org/en- ..

US/docs/Mozilla/QA/Bug_writing_guidelines

A heads up: github.com are the original software engineers for Thunderbird and this is where I had to post a new (bug #) ..

Thank you for reminding me to take my medication because it helps to show actual information about Thunderbird..
