The recovery key would give you access to your account in case you forgot and lost your account password.

Even though the email account tied to your Firefox account doesn't exist anymore, you should still be able to login to your Firefox account using that old email address. Then change the primary email address for the Firefox account. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-primary-email-address-firefox-accounts
