Thunderbird kept crashing instead of opening, after the latest update , so after sending a crash report, I tried reinstalling. Now when trying to set up an existing account, I get a message that it's unable to connect to the server," probably wrong configuration, pswd, or username". The pswd and username should be OK, but I don't know what to do about the configuration.

Success!!!! When I switched my outgoing server BACK to comcast.net on port 465 (from 587) , a window popped up ( it hadn't popped up previously) that asked for my comcast email password. After entering that, everything seems OK now. Thanks very much for all of the help I have received!!

Right now my outgoing server is set to port 587 , SSL/TLS , normal pswd, & my email address. I started out with port 465 , with the same problem though. I checked my Bitdefender program settings , including turning it completely off, but that didn't fix it. I also looked at my Internet connections in the control panel to choose the default program as TB for sending email, but still no luck.

Right now my outgoing port is set to 587, but I started out with 465 with no success. The settings are ( and were for 465 too) for normal pswd, ,user name my email address. Also, I checked in the control panel , making sure TB is set as the default program to send email. I tried Bitdefender completely turned off too.Still no luck though. I don't know what else to try. Thanks btw , for your help.

I tried port 465 with those settings, SSL/TLS & normal pswd, & email address, but it couldn't send an email. Now I'm trying port 587, but no success. I've also rechecked Bitdefender & it isn't scanning outgoing emails & is allowed both directions in the firewall. I also made sure TB is the default program in the control panel . What else can I try?
