I installed t-bird in my outlook folder. Now there are replicas of my personal email data with suffixes .sbd and .msf. What is their purpose and can I delete them?

No there are folders and indexes that Thunderbird uses in it's processing.

Delete them and you will probably have to start by installing Thunderbird all over after you manually delete the profile you corrupted.

Why would you install Thunderbird in a folder of another application?
