When I bring up Mozilla and start typing in the address field - the curser jumps to the search box - VERY IRRITATING.

Can I adjust a setting or something to stop this?

That is done by a JavaScript on the (Google) page to set focus to the search bar.
You can stop the loading with the ESC key or set a blank page as the startup page and click the Home button if you want the Home page to appear.

Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show a blank page"
