After upgrading to Firefox 5 I get a message: "Firefox is currently in offline mode and can't browse the Web." IE 9 connects to the web with no problem. Suggestions?

This began immediately with the installation of FF5.0 after upgrading from FF3.6.18. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both FF 3.6.18 and FF 5.0: the old version connects to the web with no problem but FF5.0 never does. IE9 is able to connect just fine. Thinking my firewall software (McAfee) might be getting in the way of FF5.0, I uninstalled it but still had the connection problem.
