favicons broken in bookmarks toolbar after update to Firefox 8?
I just update to Firefox 8 and a whole bunch of favicons in the address bar and the toolbar that worked fine in FF 7 now display with a dotted line square. Force refreshing or using an extension like Places does not fix the issue.
Approximately 20% of my sites that have working favicons in every other browser no longer work in Firefox 8

Same issue with the favicons. That blank icon shell looks ugly! Please change.

Already tried that. No dice.
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
I'm experiencing the same issue. The favicons that went missing were not being displayed on my tabs or in the address bar, either. I can confirm that these sites had custom favicons (not the default Firefox favicon) before I upgraded to 8.0 this morning.
I closed Firefox and deleted the places.sqlite file to force a refresh. Since then, most of my favicons are being refreshed (restored) once I visit the sites. However, some are still using the new placeholders (squares with dotted lines).

Works temporarily. The favicons go missing again as soon as you click on the bookmarked URL.
To be clear, the favicons were there. My issue is not with the the new "blank" favicons for sites without them. The issue is that they disappeared immediately after the latest update of Firefox.

I don't want to know possible causes of the problem, I just want an update to fix it!
Anyone know how to suppress the display of bookmark icons entirely? I have browser.chrome.favicons and browser.chrome.site_icons both set to false in about:config, so they're not stored in places, but that means that with Firefox 8 I'm now seeing this dotted-line placeholder all over the place. I don't ever want to see them. I found a couple hits for userChrome.css tweaks supposedly addressing this but they were for much earlier versions and don't seem to have any effect in Fx 8.
This code in userChrome.css should work:
@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */ #personal-bookmarks .bookmark-item > .toolbarbutton-icon { display:none!important; }
I have the same problem, but note: the problem is NOT that the dotted-line box is showing up per se; it's that favicons that used to appear on bookmarks no longer do so, even though a valid favicon exists for that Web site, and even though I visit the Web site again by clicking on that link and even though about:config confirms that favicons should be showing up.
In other words, favicons are not being saved or refreshed; they are all turning to the dotted box icon and staying that way, no matter what.
To repeat, the dotted-line icon is not the problem; it's the loss of favicons that appeared properly in FF7 and the failure in FF8 to update favicons after clicking on links.
In a possibly related bug, the Adblock Plus icon no longer appears in the Navigation Toolbar, even though about:config confirms that it should and even though the option to display in the Navigation Bar is checked and even though an icon does appear in the Status Bar and even though the add-on is installed and otherwise working normally.

cor-el - When you have a few thousands of bookmarks, it is not practical to use "checkplaces" to check them because you cannot use Firefox once it started scanning. And it will take a long time to scan through a few thousands of bookmarks.
is there any way to support this on the backend of my website? inside the header somewhere? - I dont want any of my users coming to my site with FF8 and not seeing my favicons - you know - the ones my boss hardly cares about - the ones ive put "his time" into developing a standard UX for our shoppers? I design and maintain 8+ sites and I'd hate for my users to get lost in browsing because they have FF8 and improper plugins.
Face it, Mozilla, we're quite put out that prior to FF8 the favicons existed and now YOU think you can fix it with these different answers in all the different threads that have been generated. Erasing files from our profiles folders (some that cause a loss of our histories), adding add-ons that we shouldn't have to, etc. Just fix the d**n thing and make us have one less problem. You have enough trouble with the loss of Google's funding, you don't need a mass exodus of users on top of that. I'm going back to FF7 and if I get fed up enough, I'll go to Chrome.
