we have non admin users on Windows 7. They change the homepage and it works for that session. When they close the browser, and restart it again the default homepage is shown.

Do you have any (security) software installed that may restore files at boot time?

You might find the help article Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history to be of assistance. It could be that they are unknowingly using Private Browsing mode, which will not save data from one session to the next.

Hi sctl. Thanks for the reply. No Private Browsing being used. I have now discovered that even as the machine administrator, and not a network administrator, it won't HOLD the home page.

I've since removed 7.01, Rebooted. Installed 6.02 and get the same issue. My feeling now is that there is an issue with Windows 7 holding something as the default homepage..

more head scratching to be done........

Cheers

Hi Cor-El, thanks for the reply. I've tried the Preferences file and user.js file and still no change in the outcome when the user closes firefox and restarts it. We do have security software installed, Eset SmartSecurity. But we are sure it isn't that causing the problem. I'll have to test this again with the removal of the package. I'd of thought though that this would effect all browsers used on the system. I'll double check though!.

Update. This looks to be a mozilla.cfg setting. If I take out the pref("browser.startup.homepage","ourwebpage"); it loads the basic firefox "FirstPage" How do I get around adding a default homepage that can be changed by the user? I have tried adding defaultPref.. .. then the webpage info.. BUT it retrurns a Failed to read the configuration file. Please contact your system administrator.

Do I need to create a prefs.js file? And if I do how do I get it to work for each new user that logs into that machine?

Just found this from MockBox.net... http://mockbox.net/configmgr-sccm/174-install-and-configure-firefox-silently.html

"To set default settings from an application level for all new and existing users you will need to use a general config file. The unfortunate consequence is that once the setting is configured it can not be changed by the user, whether or not you use 'pref' or 'lockPref'"

I'm continuing to read that page to see what else we can do. Thanks for all your help in the previous posts.
