Ctrl+T opening a new window instead of new tab

Whenever I start firefox, it opens up properly, but in this first window, when I try to open a new tab on the same window using Ctrl+T, it opens a new second window. Ctrl+T works in the second window, but not in the first window. Can anyone help me to solve this problem????
