Why do I keep getting an error message that reads "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded."

Whenever I click on a link that opens a new tab using "about:tab", an error pops up. The error box is titled "Alert" and the message reads "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded."

However, once I click OK, the page loads just fine. At first, I thought it might be one of my add-ons (Iuse a bunch), but it still occurs after restarting in Safe Mode. Any thoughts?

I can even create the problem without clicking on a link inside a page if I simply type about:tab in the address bar.

I am using Firefox 12.0

The problem has something to do with the setting to do with the setting on how to handle links that open in a new window.

SETTING TITLE: Open links that open in a new window in:

OPTIONS: New Tab; New Window; Current Tab

The problem does not occur if I select New Window or Current Tab. It does occur if I select New Tab.

Wow! I actually solved this on my own. I didn't find any thread that helped, but after reading a few, I figured poking around in about.config would help... and it did!

Here is how I solved the problem:

  1. Typed about:config in address bar.
  2. When I got to the warning about voiding the warranty, clicked I'll be careful, I promise!
  3. I found the setting entitled browser.newtabl.url (use the Search: box).
  4. I double-clicked on the entry entitled browser.newtabl.url and deleted the info in the value portion.
  5. Clicked OK.
  6. Closed the tab.
  7. Restarted Firefox and problem was solved.
