Some kind of alarm when the internet goes down
Good day. I am using WiFi to connect to the internet. Someone else owns the modem and gave me permission to use it. Sometimes, the modem is working, but looses the internet connection. I want to know, does anyone know of an add-on or windows gadget or program that would let me know when the net is out.

hi, the symbol for your wifi connection on the bottom right of your windows system tray should show an error sign once access to the internet is lost.
I know, I have it in my system tray. But the symbol is so small it is hard to see that there is a problem. I wanted something that would flash or something to get my attention.
on windows 7 you could try the following (please note that my OS is not in english, so i may not get the exact right labels in my description): go to the windows task planner & create a new task. give it a name of your choosing and switch to the trigger tab where you create a new trigger (launch task at an event; protocol: system, source: dns client events, event-id: 1014).
then go to the actions tab, where you can set-up a custom message, which will pop up in a dialog once the trigger is called (or set any other action; for example you could make firefox open another custom tab through command line arguments, etc.)...
Thanks, philipp. I'll check it out.
Hi, philipp. Your information seems to be right on. But I had some problems. First, I got to the Task Scheduler, and tried to enter the information the way you showed me. But the trigger by event just would not set up. After some time, I discovered that the event log was not turned on. After an hour looking thru help screens, and the search engine, I finally found out how to turn it on. It kept giving me an error message. After more hours of searching. I finally got the log working. I had to rename the C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup directory. But first I had to take over ownership of that directory. (Boy, am I dizzy). Anyway, I got the task set up. Now I just have to see if it works. Will let you know. Thanks again. BTW, where you had protocol in the instruction is called log on my system.
Hi, philipp. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. The guy whose WiFi
I was using decided to shut it down. I had to shop around for my own
system. Now I'm back on line.
As to your idea using Windows Task Scheduler, it did not work as I wanted.
As far as I can tell, the program only runs when I manually call it. Still,
I might be able to re-write it for what I want. At any rate, I thank you
very much for your help. Happy Holidays.
Hey this is a bit old, but would it be possible to do this with a script?
This is add ons found for your system

Hi rmcguigan. Happy Holidays.
I took a look at Smart-IP Connection Info. It looks nice, but
I don't see that there is any alarm for web lose.
As to the batch file, I'm going to look it over. Thanks for your help.
HI Fred,
How did that bath file work out? I was thinking about add ons, are you making one?
Rachel
I found a bunch of stuff on the net, but most do not do all that I want. I am just finishing writing my own batch program and now I have to test it. I checked out the individual units of the program, now I have to see if it all comes together. I used to write my own programs in QBasic, and later bought QuickBasic. But both are lost to time.
Why to ping Google? They can ban your IP.
The program I found was already set to Google. Should I ping someone else?
