I received the latest update to v36. Now, upon opening, FF goes immediately into not responding. It doesn't matter if a tab is open or not. This last for a while, stops and any mouse click immediately sends it back. It was working fine before this update. BTW, yes, I have tried testing in safe mode and get the same results. I have just completely reinstalled FF and not only did it still hang, but it also won't load a webpage once the tab is available.

Is this something to do with the new Hello communications? I have heard it causes problems.

It is very possible since the problem only started with this build. My desktop hasn't updated yet so I don't have any problems with it. I had hoped that starting FF in safe mode would disable everything except the browser itself to test with but I still have the same problem there.

There is a way to disable the hello stuff. In about:config, set these settings: loop.enabled -> false loop.throttled2 -> false

You can also right-click the smile button and choose "Remove".

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

See:

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Thanks, I tried the above and it still does it. As soon as FF opens, it freezes and goes into not responding for several seconds before I am able to do anything. Once it is available, opening a website works but if I try to click a link it does it again.
