I will open new tabs from a single site - i.e. Google. In Chrome, all the tabs open to a uniform width so that when I close a series of tabs the "X" always comes to the same exact location as the tab that I closed. In this way, I do not have to search different size tabs for the "X" to close it.

The more tabs are open, the more room is needed, After a few open, the tabs start to shrink. And if you keep going, the tabs start to overflow the window. At that point, there will be an arrow on the right side of the bar to let you assess tabs that are hidden.

Many aspects of Firefox's interface can be modified with custom style rules. I believe there are rules for the minimum and maximum tab width which you could override by making them the same, but the specifics would take some research. Or maybe this old extension still works? https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/custom-tab-width/

By the way, if you have a mouse with a middle button or scroll wheel, clicking that on a tab will close it, providing a much bigger target to aim for than the tiny "x" button.

The Tab close button of the next (previous) tab should appear in the position as the button on the current tab if you close a tab. Only if you move the mouse pointer out of the Tab bar then the Tab bar is redrawn and the width of the tabs is readjusted. Note that you can middle-click a tab to close this tab.

I installed the add-on but can't find it. Any idea how/where to locate it?

You might need to use its Options button on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, on the right side, it should be in alphabetical order among the enabled extensions. Does it have an Options button?

I think that the extension re-adds support for the previously used prefs browser.tabs.tabMinWidth and browser.tabs.tabMaxWidth, so you can check the about:config page.
