How can I leave messages on the server while deleting them from Thunderbird?

I want to be able to delete emails from my desktop while leaving them on the server. I cannot find a control for this in the Thunderbird server settins. I am running the current version of Thunderbird, installed within the last six weeks. Thanks for any advice you can give me. John

And is the account IMAP or POP?

IMAP accounts by definition have a synchronized state with the server so no setting exists for that account type to do as you wish.
