I recieved an email that purported to be from firefox asking me to change sign in; I made it spam !

You were right to be suspicious of that mail.

I can't say much about the I just paid $89.00 to fix a virus purported to be from Micro-soft because I have not seen it.

As to malware protection, there are free programs available. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
