I have recently added a Microsoft exchange account to Thunderbird. I am able to connect to and receive emails through imap, but I cannot send emails. The error I get is a 'Login Failed' error with the message 'Login to server smtp-mail.outlook.com failed.' but I have double checked that my login information is correct (and reset my password and tried again). I can also happily send emails from the webmail and from a desktop copy of Outlook. I have tried all the suggestions in the 'Cannot send messages' troubleshooting article with no success.

My outgoing server settings are:

Server Name: smtp-mail.outlook.com

Port: 587

Authentication method: Normal password

Connection Security: STARTTLS

This is a Microsoft Exchange email, I am running Thunderbird 52.9.1 on Windows 10. Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

Thank you sfhowes. I did indeed have SMTP access enabled, but in navigating the admin settings I noticed that this address was set as a shared mailbox when it didn't need to be.

Changing from a shared mailbox back to a regular mailbox sorted the problem (though I'm not entirely sure why).

Has your Exchange server administrator enabled SMTP access? They appear to have enabled IMAP, but maybe not SMTP. If SMTP is not enabled, it may be necessary to set up your account with the ExQuilla add-on.
