Tried to download and install the Firefox browser, 64 bit. While processing, said "cannot continue, cannot find VCRUNTIME140_1.dll. I know that I did remove the Visual C re-distributable file or from the windows system but have been trying to re-install. Downloaded and executed visual c, to no effect, did not re-install the driver or whatever Firefox is looking for during the install. At a total loss on how to re-instate the VCRUNTIME140_1.DLL so that I can use Firefox, HELP!!! P.S. the help provided on-line tells one how to re-install the driver but so "poluted" with other programs wanting you to download their programs that impossible to find the correct tools to use. Anyway, your help will be appreciated. I do like Firefox and have been enticed to use Microsoft Ecge but do not want to if I can help!

Do you use programs such as ccleaner?

It appears you are on Windows 10. Please make sure your system is up-to-date. Windows button -> Settings -> Update & Security.

Can you try running a malware scan?

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Hi Andrew, have Mcafee, ran scan, clean system, virus protect installed, system completely up to date, still having the problem with VCRUNTIME140_1.dll and I haven't even installed the program Firefox. When I re-start windows 10, still issues the same error, cannot find VCRUNTIME1`40_1.dll, very strange in deed! Sid Kraft

Can you check if you only have one file of msvcp140.dll? See /questions/1280643

Can you try a clean reinstall?

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows: (Note: Check both folders.)
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Fred: Trying to run sfc /scannow, after getting into the system32 module, system says you must be an administrator using a console session!!! So frustrating, I am the sole person, using this computer which is mine and I am prohibited from doing something, how GROSS!!! Please explain how I can be an administrator, using command prompt! I know how to do in windows 10, just say "run as administrator" but not how to do in command prompt? Sid Kraft

Well Fred: Finally found out how to use the administrator power shell and ran sfc /scannow. It ran for about 3 minutes, said it found corrupted software and fixed! I re-started the win 10 computer, got the same "disgusting: error "process cannot continue to execute, cannot find VCRUNTIME140_1.DLL!!! Guess I will have to live with this stupid comment when I start computer and use Microsoft Edge instead of FireFox. Absolutely cannot understand why Firefox uses this .dll and Edge does not? Oh well, such is life! If you can come up with another answer to this problem, I will try again, i.e. like re-loading the Visual C Redistribution software that I removed or? Please let me know, Sid Kraft
