Some of my form fields ignore the 'size' attribute and default to 100% of their container and some do not. How can I fix this?

Since updating to Firefox 8, my form input fields and text areas do not display properly. Even though all of them are coded using the same attributes and style sheets, some fields display the correct length according to the 'size' attribute while others (on the same page) ignore the 'size' attribute and seemingly default to a 100% width of their container. This has happened on several different websites (some of which I have built and some built by others). I can provide a screenshot to help illustrate what I'm talking about if that will help.
